Rock goalie Nick Rose was traded to the Calgary Roughnecks earlier today. I’ll probably talk about that particular trade, as well as any other upcoming trades (several of which are rumoured), in another article later but today we’re going to look at how Rose came to the Rock in the first place.
Note: A lot of draft picks are listed in this article. I will list each of them with a number in square brackets, and then describe what happened to that numbered pick later on. Without the numbers, it’s next to impossible to follow everything. As always, thanks to the Corporal and swarmitup.com for all the draft details.
On March 19, 2012, Calgary traded Nick Rose and a conditional 2nd round pick in 2014 [1] to the Rock for a 2014 first round pick [2].

[1] The 2nd round pick was conditional on the Rock making the Champion’s Cup final in 2012. If they had made the finals, the pick would have remained with Calgary. Since they didn’t, it went to Toronto. That pick was later traded to New England along with Craig England, Mike Burke, a 2015 first [3] and a 2016 second [4] for Brodie Merrill and a 2015 second [5]. Later still, the pick was traded to Colorado for Mike McNamara. Colorado picked Alexis Buque.
[2] The first rounder that went to Calgary was traded to New England (along with the 8th [6], 26th [7], and 27th [8] overall picks in 2014) for a 2015 first [9] and a 2016 third [10]. New England picked Mark Cockerton.
[3] With the 2015 first, New England picked Dan Lintner.
[4] The 2016 second was traded back to Toronto along with Dan Lintner for Kevin Crowley. With that pick, Toronto picked Latrell Harris.
[5] With the 2015 second, Toronto picked Turner Evans.
[6] With the 8th overall pick, New England chose Quinn Powless.
[7] With the 26th overall pick, New England chose Ty Thompson. Note that this is not the Ty Thompson currently playing for San Diego. This one is a cousin of Lyle, Miles, Jeremy, and Haina.
[8] The 27th overall pick was traded to Rochester for a 2015 third [11]. Rochester picked Brier Jonathan.
[9] With the 2015 first, Calgary picked Reilly O’Connor.
[10] With the 2016 third, Calgary picked Keegan Rittinger.
[11] With the 2015 third, New England picked Phil Caputo.
So in summary, Calgary ended up giving up Rose for O’Connor and Rittinger. O’Connor played one season in Calgary, Rittinger never made the NLL.
Toronto got Rose and Turner Evans. They also ended up with Dan Lintner, Latrell Harris, and Brodie Merrill indirectly.
Calling that trade a win for the Rock.
